How WPM and Accuracy Are Calculated
Gross WPM is calculated by dividing the total number of characters typed by 5 (the standard word length), then dividing by the time in minutes. This gives your raw typing speed without accounting for mistakes.
Net WPM is your actual usable speed. It is calculated as Gross WPM minus (Total Errors divided by Time in minutes). Net WPM is the metric most exams use for qualification.
Accuracy is the percentage of correctly typed characters out of all characters typed. A high accuracy with moderate speed is generally better than high speed with low accuracy, since errors reduce your Net WPM.
Formula: Net WPM = (Characters Typed / 5) / Time (min) - (Errors / Time (min))
GCC-TBC Marathi Typing Rules & Speed Criteria
The Government Certificate in Computer Typing Basic Course (GCC-TBC) is the official benchmark for Marathi typing in Maharashtra government recruitment. The exam is conducted on the Mangal font using the Inscript or Remington Gail keyboard layout.
Marathi Qualifying Speed
30 WPM
10 minutes · 90% accuracy minimum
English Qualifying Speed
40 WPM
7 minutes · 90% accuracy minimum
Backspace is allowed during the test, but every correction costs time. The final score is based on Net WPM, which means excessive corrections will lower your qualifying speed even if your raw typing is fast.
SSC CHSL / CGL Full vs. Half Mistakes
The SSC Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) distinguishes between two types of mistakes, each carrying a different penalty weight:
Full Mistakes
Counted when an entire word is omitted, added, or substituted with a different word. Each full mistake is heavily penalized and can significantly reduce your Net WPM.
Half Mistakes
Counted for minor errors within a word, such as spelling mistakes, wrong capitalization, or incorrect spacing. Two half mistakes typically equal one full mistake in the deduction formula.
The official cut-off error rate is typically 5-7%. Candidates exceeding this threshold are disqualified regardless of their typing speed.
